Composite veneers or porcelain veneers?
Do you need veneers?

Everyone’s teeth are unique and whilst some people are lucky enough to show off dazzlingly white, straight and perfect teeth, the majority of us have teeth with “character”. There is a way, however, that you can achieve a natural and healthy smile, albeit with a little bit of help from our dentists.

Dental veneers are custom-made casings that fit neatly over the natural tooth giving it a more uniform appearance and hiding any tooth defects.

What are veneers?

Veneers are very thin shells that are permanently stuck to the front of your existing teeth. They are shaped and coloured to match your natural teeth, so they fit in perfectly with your smile.

They are an easier option than crowns because while crowns require a full covering for your entire tooth, veneers only require a single front shell to cover just the front of each tooth. Veneers are either made from composite materials or porcelain, each of which has its benefits.

Depending on your needs, preferences, and the condition of your teeth, you can choose one of the following types of veneers with the help of your dentist:

Composite veneers or porcelain veneers?

Composite veneers are made out of white resin material that is customised for your teeth and can be tailored to the shade that you are looking for to give a natural result.

This type of dental veneer is usually used to fix small tooth imperfections like small chips or cracks in the teeth or as a conservative alternative to porcelain veneers. Composite veneers have the advantage and convenience of being made whilst you wait in the dentist’s chair.

Porcelain veneers require a little more preparation and customisation to hide more obvious defects and to give a natural look.

Do you need veneers?

As a dental treatment, veneers are used for a range of cosmetic reasons:

  • To disguise a chipped or broken tooth
  • To act as protection for weak, cracked or fractured teeth
  • To improve the appearance of discoloured teeth
  • To close small gaps in teeth
  • To help strengthen teeth that have undergone root canal surgery

Dental veneers present a very simple solution to some of the most common problems experienced with teeth and the overall effect can transform your whole smile.

If you book a full dental check-up today, we can assess your suitability for veneers and check the health of your teeth and gums.

Frequently asked questions

If you are unhappy with your smile, veneers can be an excellent solution. However, any cosmetic procedure requires careful consideration. At National Dental Care, we are always happy to consult you about veneers and other tooth restoration options. If you want to learn more, please contact us to book an appointment today.

No, veneers don’t ruin your teeth. While your dentist will remove a thin layer from the front of your tooth to make room for the veneer, the veneer is then permanently cemented in place. This strengthens your tooth, makes it resistant to staining, and improves the look of your smile.

It takes two to three appointments for the full process, which each take one to two hours.

Not typically. Your dentist will usually numb the area before the treatment for added comfort, but since the procedure is minimally invasive, there is very little discomfort, if any.

For porcelain veneers, once your teeth have been examined and the veneer treatment plan fully explained, you will need two further appointments. One to fit the temporary dental veneers in place and another appointment around two weeks following to fit the porcelain veneers in place.
